Sense of Ending

The Sense of an Ending: Julian Barnes: Teacher Resource & Worksheet

The style of the writer is ‘Memory Novel ‘or ‘Suspense Thriller’ or ‘Psychological Thriller’ This novel is mainly centered on the characteristics of 21st century writing. Here, writer take some distance than the writer’ Dan Brown’ of ‘Da Vinci Code’. Dan Brown’s journey is outer journey .while, ’Julian Barnes’ take more step ahead on this journey. As a’ journey within self’. Here, Julian Barnes opens one more layer of the life of human-being.
May be reply  of Veronica ’s  phrase ‘Blood Money’  suggests  her(veronica) mother given 500 pounds to Tony .And, she was given that money in replace of Veronica ‘s heresy on Tony. And, another possibility of this phrase means that without doing the work he got money from his  mother-in-law given him money without doing any work. So, that’s another possibility of the phrase used by Veronica in her mail. And, this dialogue from d text is also near to this truth.
‘Blood money?’
I looked at the words and couldn’t make sense of them. She’d
erased my message and its heading, not signed her reply, and just
answered with a phrase. I had to call up my sent email and read it
through again to work out that grammatically her two words could
only be a reply to my asking why her mother had left me five
hundred pounds. But it didn’t make any sense beyond this. No
blood had been spilt. My pride had been hurt, that was true. But
Veronica was hardly suggesting that her mother was offering
money in exchange for the pain her daughter had caused me, was
she? Or was she?
Here, writer also play one puzzle with d reader by putting out this sum: b=s-v x/+a1 or a2+v+a1 X s=b?.
B=baby(Adrian)
S=Sarah
A=Adrian(Father)
V=veronica
Here, Adrian’s equation suggests his relation with Sarah  mother of Veronica .And, the child grown under them. And, may be that  baby is Adrian(second) abnormal.Tony’s latter here becomes tragedy or curse for d baby of Sarah Ford and Adrian.And,Tony& Adrian both of regrets here. Tony regrets for his letter and Adrian regrets for his relation with d woman whose age is double than her. And. Though he can’t able to reach at the real truth. And, this thing writer makes puzzle for the readers.
Actually, Adrian’s diary is willed to Tony  by Sarah Ford. But, Sarah Ford owned it as Adrian had d relation with Sarah .And, that  diary also possessed by Veronica. Because the  second  abusing word for d Veronica .so, Tony knows very well that, that  diary might read by Veronica. and, in this way she becomes possessor of d diary.
It’s also according to the law of possibility as I before say Adrian had relation with Sarah Ford the woman whose quite double aged. And, with  whom ‘Adrian’ had ‘sexual relation’. May be that regret of Adrian made him poor or weak like dead not a physical one but mental  or psychological death. That also comes in ‘The Swamp Dwellers’ by wole Soyinka. So, it’s possible that Adrian is alive but just because of mental trauma he becomes  ‘Abnormal’ just like his child. And, his that guilty lead him towards ‘Suicide’ either Inner or outer.
Veronica has  also some  relation with Adrian as a boy-girl friend. And, her mother had also illegimate relation with  Adrian. so that thing becomes cause of suffering in d community for d Veronica. so, she has to suffer in d community .
Yes, of course the secrets of diary some page missing just like in proof of Jesus Christ ’s video which was shown by u. In d same way here some pages as a dots which is missing from d diary. May be, that thing is ambiguous for d readers.
Whatever the words given to  manipulative , calculative, stubborn, sacrificial, trustworthy and good samarthian used for her. But, behind any element is responsible for it than it’s  ‘Pshychology’ that I think.
‘Unreliable Narrator’ in simple words  narrator whose not reliable. This term first of all coined by ‘Wayne C. Book’ in his work ‘Rhetoric of Fiction’. Here, narrator considerable as a  remain as a ‘Unreliable’ just because of  memory or  nos

Thrillers heavily stimulate the viewer's moods, giving them a high level of anticipation, ultra-heightened expectation, uncertainty, surprise, anxiety and terror. Films of this genre tend to be adrenaline-rushing, gritty, rousing and fast-paced.

A thriller provides the sudden rush of emotions, excitement, and exhilaration that drive the narrative, sometimes subtly with peaks and lulls, sometimes at a constant, breakneck pace. It keeps the audience on the "edge of their seats", akin to a sensation of hanging from a cliff, as the plot builds towards a climax. Literary devices such as red herrings, plot twists, and cliffhangers are used extensively. A thriller is usually a villain-driven plot, whereby he or she presents obstacles that the protagonist must overcome.

Waiting for Godot

Worksheet: Screening Movie Waiting for Godot

waiting for Godot is  second time in my syllabus movie was so monotonous for us. in this play or movie convey a message of nothingness and i am very hardly agree in the nothingness is something .and the absurd theater was newly introduce by           semual  bucket he shows nothingness of human mind. virginia woolf was uses sream of consciousness in the novel same way semual bucket introduce absurdity of human life and mind and character are constuntuly waiting for godot same way we are waiting for something And tomorrow i will attend all the question.  Here, myth of Sisyphus can be found because Sisyphus is more famous for his punishment in the underworld. Then for what he did in his life. According to Greek myth Sisyphus is condemned to roll a rock - up to the top of a mountain, and the rock roll back down to the bottom every time, Every time he reaches at the top hence, Sisyphus does this thing which has a no meaning as well as purpose and in Waiting for Godot no one come, no one goes too. Estragon and Vladimir are waiting for Godot but Godot never comes. So by this play Samuel Beckett conveys his idea about meaninglessness of life.

To answer the question of setting here, Beckett used the same painting which was used by Casper David so it can be interpreted that Beckett took inspiration from Caspar David’s Painting and we know that the painting is either “men and women contemplating the moon” or “two men contemplating the moon” so this connection can be observed in the setting of the play.

In India there is hierarchy in Europe country there is no hierarchy. We Indian are idea of boss we connect with respect and worker always bow down with their knees. But in Europe there is a difference. They question a lot because there is not idea. “name of respect “they doubt a lot and question a lot when our Indian children or student are question so parent or teacher are say  the child or student was misbehave with us. Whenever in any company the worker came with new idea and boss never accept their idea. So the boss may be bondage for young India. And now the things are changing not nessasory to die for the company keep company and jump  another and loyalty who happy when we are loyal monarchy was benefited now not monarchy so in democracy awards and rewards are given to the solger the name of parmvirchakra and symbols of paliya also. To The Lighthouse

  1. Question and Answer

  1. How can you explain that 'what' Virginia Woolf wanted to say (for example, the complexity of human relationship, the everyday battles that people are at in their relationship with near and dear ones, the struggle of a female artist against the values of middle/upper class society etc) can only be said in the way she has said? (Key: The 'How' of the narrative technique is to be discussed along with features of Stream of Consciousness technique which helps Woolf to put in effective manner what she experienced in abstractions. 100 words)
  2. Do you agree: "The novel is both the tribute and critique of Mrs. Ramsay"? (Key: Take some clues from the painting of Mrs Ramsay drawn by Lily Briscoe and the article by Andre Viola. Can we read Mrs. R in context of the idea of Ideal Indian Woman - Karyeshu dasi, Karaneshu manthri; Bhojeshu mata, Shayaneshu rambha; Kshamayeshu dharithri, Roopeshu lakshmi; Satkarma yukta, Kuladharma pathni. 100 words)
  3. Considering symbolically, does the Lighthouse stand for Mrs. Ramsay or the narrator (Virginia Woolf herself who is categorically represented by Lily)? (Key: Take help from the presentation on Symbolism to connect Mrs. Caroline Ramsay with Lighthouse. Secondly, the narrator / author cannot fully disappear from the novel and thus the stoicism of Lily to paint and thus prove that she can paint, is symbolically presented in stoicism of Lighthouse. Read lighthouse symbol from presentation slide with this insight to connect lighthouse with the narrator. Give your concluding remarks in 100 words)
  4. In the article by Joseph Blotner, two myths are patterned together. Name the myths? How they are zeroed down to the symbols of 'Window' and 'Lighthouse'? How does the male phallic symbol represent feminine Mrs. Ramsay? (100 words)
  5. What do you understand by the German term 'Künstlerroman'? How can you justify that 'To The Lighthouse' is 'Künstlerroman' novel? (100 words) (Key: http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/325047/Kunstlerroman)
  6. "... the wages of obedience is death, and the daughter that reproduces mothering to perfection, including child-bearing, already has on her cheeks the pallor of death. One reminded here of various texts by Lucy Irigaray, in which she attacks mothers for being, however unwillingly, accomplices in the patriarchal system of oppression." (Viola). In light of this remark, explain briefly Lily's dilemma in 'To The Lighthouse'. (100 words)
  7. You have compared the 'beginning' and the 'ending' of the novel and the film adaptation of the novel directed by Colin Gregg (you can see it again in the embedded video below this). Do you think that the novel is more poignant than the movie? If yes, do you ascribe the power of appeal to words than to the screen?
  8. How do you interpret the last line of the novel (It was done; it was finished.Yes, she thought, laying down her brush in extreme fatigue, I have had my vision.) with reference to the ending of the film (After the final stroke on the canvass with finishing touch, Lily walks inside the house. As she goes ante-chamber, the light and dark shade makes his face play hide-and-seek. She climbs stairs, puts her brush aside, walks through the dark and light to enter her room. Gently closes the door - speaks: "Closed doors, open windows" - lies on the bed and with some sort of satisfaction utters: "Dearest Briscoe, you are a fool".) (100 words)
Ans-2
Yes I agree with your point. The way Virginia Woolf create a character sketch of Mrs.Ramsay it shows two sides of coins good side and bad side also. When we think point of view of author it shows character of Mrs.Ramsay a very traditional wife. The way one traditional women think about her family and her social reputation. As a part of her social reputation the way she invites guest for vacation and her idea about match making it shows her conscious attention towards social reputation so it shows a good side of Mrs.Ramsay.
 When we see about mythical references of about wife and mother. Rhea as a mother and Demeter as a wife in this myth mother expectation of her daughter because the mother duty towards her family so much so she expects from her daughter she also fulfills duty of her family. For example Mrs.Ramsay daughter died very young age at a time of child birth time. So it is a proves tribute and criticism towards Mrs.Ramsay.

 Ans-3
In symbolism, I like to say that light house shows a aim of the novel to reached the light house it is a prime concern of the novel. The title of the novel “To the Lighthouse” it shows importance of light house.  And second thing Virginia Woolf also in dilemma that Mrs. Ramsay character was traditional women and Lily’s character was modern women author also in dilemma what kind of life style she live.
And i like to go a side of Mrs. Ramsay and light house symbolically represented Mrs. Ramsay because light house it is symbol of there is no darkness and it is stand for highest paint of earth so it representMrs.Ramsay.so I would like to write Mrs.Ramsay during her life and after her death each and every person remember her a lot and see all the things from perspective of Mrs.Ramsay.

Ans-5
“To The Lighthouse” written by Virginia Woolf. In the novel main female figure character of Mrs.Ramsay she loves so much her son James. And second thing Kunstleroman novel means bildungsroman when author shows child age to the young age shows progress of character when it is a Kunstleroman.
And in this novel Virginia Woolf shows the journey of James child hood to young age and constantly craving reached “To the Lighthouse”. And not only physically grownup shows Virginia Woolf but shows also mental grown up and psychologically mature mind at the end of the novel.

Ans-6
In the novel “to the light house “Mrs.Ramsay as a protagonist of the novel as female finger. And Virginia Woolf tries to convey the message of as a traditional woman and as a mother and a wife she was a perfect female finger. and she tries to conveys she was best wife or mother and she also say to her daughter you have to must be follow me the way I live a life you must be copied   my thing.
The Greek   god and goddesses are primordial images are must be written in the novel and may be consciously or unconsciously Virginia Woolf followed the idea of primordial goddess  as a female figure mother ,wife ,daughter and also Rhea, Demeter,Persephone. constructed by those mythical ideal womanhood Mrs.Ramsay.
Mother at a some point know very well if my daughter not reproduce her child so there is not good thing for her.
                                “Angel in the house”
It follow the idea of one women character always ready to sacrifices a one female figure as a mother , daughter , and wife.

Ans-7
The novel of Virginia Woolf was more effective than than the movie because in the novel discussion with each and every dialogue and Virginia Woolf itself follow the interior monologue each and every person think in his own mind and interior monologue creates intellectual image of Virginia Woolf. Doyall it self think that the novel is more effective than the movie the director only shows the dialogue of the character but in the novel there is no interior events its only shows external events happen and Virginia Woolf write interior monologue
So the doyall thinking was right because novel was more powerful than the movie.

Ans-8
We can say that the comparison to the movie and the novel is good to see what difference between each other. Movie  was modern version of lighting decoration and character are improve a lot as compare the novel the movie was directed by caneth so he was also understood a well literary novel .
As compared with the last line of the novel “I have find my vision “in the novel extreme wish of James to reached to the lighthouse and the banging of the novel Lilly Briscoe started a painting of Mrs. Ramsay and at the end of the novel Lilly final touch to the painting “I have had my vision” So it shows psychologically author itself reached her vision.
Lilly Briscoe her own self represented the character of Virginia Woolf
